Cold In July Review [Sundance 2014]
Last year, Jim Mickle made himself a Sundance name with We Are What We Are, a bleak yet fun twist on the horror genre. He returns this year with Cold in July - an adaptation of a popular Joe R. Lansdale crime novel - to mix up genres once again. Fresh off the Dexter circuit, Michael C. Hall plays Richard Dane, a man whose ordinary life slowly spirals to a dark place when he fatally shoots an intruder who breaks into his family’s home in the middle of the night. Cue giggles from Dexter fans at Dane’s futile attempts to clean blood from the family’s wall.

Camp X-Ray Review [Sundance 2014]
Kristen Stewart continues her attempts to shrug her mainstream Twilight fame with Camp X-Ray, a film in which she likely assumed she would be able to prove herself as a serious actor. However, while Stewart's performance isn’t exactly Oscar-worthy, it’s the film itself that lets her down in the end. Despite her best efforts and the talents of A Separation’s Peyman Moaadi, this character-driven effort is one of the noteworthy disappointments of Sundance 2014.

The Babadook Review [Sundance 2014]
As is the case with most horror films, especially those that rely on scares not-so-based in reality, suspension of disbelief on the viewer’s part is crucial to the audience’s susceptibility to be terrified. If you let yourself, director Jennifer Kent’s directorial debut, The Babadook, will revert you to a small child, wishing you had a blanket under which to hide as you try to disappear into your seat.

Bob’s Burgers Review: “Seaplane!” (Season 4, Episode 3)
After a brief hiatus, Bob’s Burgers returned this week with “Seaplane!,” a solid episode after the first two above-average episodes of the show's fourth season. It presents a unique premise, tests its characters, and showcases the voice talents of Will Forte, as supporting character “Upskirt Kurt.” Lastly, it does what the show does best: expose its awkward children to situations that are much too adult for their twisted little minds.

Bob’s Burgers Review: “Fort Night” (Season 4, Episode 2)
Leave it to Bob's Burgers to conjure a Halloween-themed episode that is actually pretty horrifying. Only a program so consistently, lightheartedly twisted would center a plot around six children trapped in a box, unknown to all of their parents, at the will of a disturbed, friendless schoolmate, "frickin' nutcase" Millie (voiced by Molly Shannon), who's seemingly had the last straw destroyed by the equally maniacal Louise. The episode offers a dark look at how these kids wrestle with what might possibly their last moments of life, and more importantly, the fact that they won't get to go trick-or-treating.

American Dad! Review: “Poltergasm” (Season 9, Episode 2)
The official signal of the American "holiday season" has begun: the Halloween inspired, spooky episodes of FOX's Sunday comedies aired on October 6th. And while the new American Dad! may not have been as "absolutely incredible" as Rita Rudner's hilarious live stand-up show, the episode tops last week's premiere with a solid, Roger-heavy plot.

The Frozen Ground Blu-Ray Review
Scott Walker wrote and directed The Frozen Ground, and while it is far from perfect, I will personally say that it takes the subject very seriously. The cast gives fearless performances, particularly Hudgens and Cusack, and Walker's script manages to depict the horror of what happened to the girls taken by Hansen without seeming exploitative. The film left me with deep respect for those who brought Hansen down and a genuine sense of sorrow for the women whose lives were taken and their families.
